Sandy Skoglund

The Artificial Mirror
10 September - 6 November 2010
Sandy Skoglund

Sandy Skoglund’s work borders between photography and installation. She constructs and elaborates in colorful environments with strong references to film, theater and advertising. Skoglund has a Masters of Fine Art in painting, which might explain the development of her work as a hybrid of installation, art and photography.

Collections of objects that stand in contrast to a background color are characteristic of Skoglund’s work. One image can require months of planning and construction before it can be photographed with a large format camera. Despite the surrealistic expression of her work, many of her images are free from retouching or digital manipulation. References to mass consumption and popular culture are a common feature in Skoglund’s photographs. One of her most recognized images is entitled Radioactive Cats, depicts neon green cats that run amok within a mundane grey kitchen.

The exhibition – The Artificial Mirror at Fotografiska features a selection of Sandy Skoglund’s fantastic imagery from the 1970s until today.

Sandy Skoglund is represented in several prestigious collections in the United States that specialize in contemporary art and photography, such as The Metropolitan Museum of Art, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art and the Dayton Art Institute.
